Thirteen outstanding students at Portland Lutheran High School, 740 SE 182^nd, were recently recognized for their accomplishments through induction into the Portland Lutheran chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Portland Lutheran students honored in the induction are as follows: sophomores Daniel Barnes, Ian Lortz, Danica Roady, and Erin Roan; juniors Ayde Alvarado, Andrew Hinkel, Christopher Lehr, Kiana MacPherson, Nicole Nguyen, Olivia Nyberg, and Amanda Schlimpert; and seniors Louisa Gan and Ryan Nguyen.

National Honor Society membership is based upon a student’s performance in four key areas: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Portland Lutheran sets even higher standards for admission into their local chapter of the NHS. Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and must also engage in voluntary service to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. These students must be strong leaders who are resourceful, promote school activities, contribute new ideas, are dependable, and exemplify positive attitudes about life. Finally, the Portland Lutheran NHS inductees are all students of good character who uphold principles of morality and ethics, are cooperative, demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, and show courtesy, concern, and respect for others.

Portland Lutheran Charters Key Club

Key Club president Olivia Nyberg holds the school’s new charter certificate. Present with her are Key Club adviser Koty Zelinka Cole, Vice-President Hana Laughton, Editor Emily Roan, Treasurer Regan Garrett, and members of the Rockwood Kiwanis Club.

Portland Lutheran High School has now chartered its first ever Key Club, a student service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Rockwood. PLS students wanted to add a new club to the school’s current offerings, and service seemed to be a natural connection with the general mission of the pre-k through 12 Christian school. Although PLS high school students are already required to complete 20 hours of service learning each year as a graduation requirement, Key Club will be a great way to help students find more meaning in that service and take ownership of the activities in which they participate.

Student officers and general members of the newly minted Key Club were installed on Tuesday, March 5 during one of the school’s twice-weekly chapel services. Members of the Rockwood Kiwanis Club sponsoring the high school students presented Olivia Nyberg, Key Club President, with a special certificate honoring the new charter.

Grandparents Day 2013

Grandparents and Special Friends Day 2013 takes place on January 28. Grandparents and other special friends are invited to spend the morning at Portland Lutheran School from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM. Please note the special arrangements for PreKindergarten: Grandparents and special friends of PreKindergarten families are invited to join us on Monday, January 28 for chapel (8:45-9:15). On Tuesday, January 29, they are invited to stay for special activities in the two PreKindergarten classrooms, allowing more of our families to participate in these activities. Look for more information to come home with students in the coming week.

Science Fair 2013

It is almost time for our annual Science Fair. Students in 5th through 8th grade each do a project and put it on display for judging. Based on the judging, the top students will go on to the Northwest Science Expo. Students in PreKindergarten through 4th grade complete class projects in order to engage in the scientific process. Mr. Tarbell will visit the classes to ask them questions about this process and about what they have learned as young scientists. Please take the time to stop in the cafetorium and see some of the projects covering all areas of science.

Bottle and Can Collection for Outdoor School

Don’t forget to bring in your cans and glass or plastic bottles with an Oregon redemption value as another fundraiser for Outdoor School. We have turned in the stockpile of cans and bottles we had on hand, so we need your help to stock up yet again. Keep in mind those cans/bottles left over from holiday events or neighbors who don’t want to travel to the grocery store to redeem. We can do it for them. Thank you for your support!

1A Hoops Classic 2012

Portland Lutheran School once again hosted the 1A Hoops Classic over the Christmas Holiday break. We had 8 schools (16 teams) participate in three days of exciting and competitive basketball. We received many compliments from coaches and fans for such an excellent tournament. Thank you to all the volunteers that took time to come and sell concessions or take admission. We could not have done it without you!

Attention college bound Seniors (yes, that’s all of you), have you filled out your FAFSA yet? If not, visit www.fafsa.gov right away to fill out the form so you don’t miss out on crucial grant and scholarship opportunities. Have questions? See www.studentaid.gov, a new website that complements the FAFSA and provides straightforward and easy-to-understand information about planning and paying for college. You can also “ask the expert” questions via the New York Times’ college blog, The Choice: www.thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com. Questions will be accepted until January 16.

Please remember, no matter what, the first letter in FAFSA stands for FREE: don’t ever pay to fill out a financial aid form!

Mad Science

Winter Formal 2013

The Junior class is putting on the Winter Formal this year on Saturday, January 12 from 8:00 – 10:00 PM. The dance will be held in the Portland Lutheran School Cafetorium. The Junior class uses this dance as one of the many ways to earn money for the class and help them to put on the Prom in the spring. This is one of the few dances we have at school. Tickets can be purchased from Morgan Sprengle and are $10 for a single and $15 for a couple.

Inclement Weather Policy 2013

At present, Portland Lutheran School determines its own closure or late opening, since we have students from different areas in the Portland-Vancouver area. Our late opening time is ordinarily 10:00 AM. A typical PLS late opening announcement would be: “Portland Lutheran Elementary and High School (and Extended Care) are opening late at 10:00 AM, with no morning Kindergarten or PreKindergarten.”

Our website will have our closure status for inclement weather. Check here first. You can also watch news announcements and listen to radio stations for closure information.

Some of our students come from quite a distance. Please be guided by conditions where you live. No public notice means that school is open at its regular time.
