Student art makes front page

Art work by PLS students recently made the front page of a worldwide art teacher website called Art Education 2.0. The students were Ploy Therdkiatmongkhon (12) and Sarah Stitzel (11), and their pieces were chosen to go on the picture gallery on the front page of the website. The artwork was from art teacher Mary Yoder’s class, and was displayed on her own Art Education page originally.

The front page picture slide shows the best works from art teachers in various grades who have posted student work for public viewing on the site. The slide show has one hundred pictures and more are added everyday, so the pictures keep moving forward. As of Friday, the 13th of January, Ploy’s art was the 19th picture and Sarah Stitzel’s was the 17th.

Ploy’s art piece was a cityscape, and it included colorful buildings integrated with different objects. The cityscape was done by using two point perspective and vanishing points; in fact, everything looks like it is going towards the points on each side of the paper. Sarah’s art piece was a block print of ballet shoes, as seen above. The print is stamped in black ink. Block Printing was done by using a square piece of linoleum and a sharp carving tool, pressing the drawing on the linoleum and carving it out. Sarah and Ploy were very happy to have pictures of their art featured on a worldwide website.

Track Coach Needed

Middle School athletics is looking for a head track and field coach for the 2012 season. This is a volunteer position which begins in mid March and will be completed by May 11. We participate in the Metro Christian League and compete in 6 track meets for the season. All meets are held at tracks throughout the Portland Metro area after school. A helping hand around the corner

What would you do with a grassy vacant lot along 181st Avenue? At one point it was farmland. Then it was home to traveling carnivals who would pitch their tents. All of this was until they planned to transform the vacant lot into a construction site; over the summer they then built a building that would turn into a hub for residents in and around the poverty-stricken Rockwood Neighborhood.

This large grassy lot was turned into a building full of resources. The $17 million facility holds eight social service providers and four dozen low-income apartments. Everything from day care to employment help to Head Start classes will be held there. It’s a one stop place to get help for finding a job, to getting a warm meal. Human Solutions hopes that residents can have one place to go for their needs instead of jumping from place to place. Rockwood is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the county; one in five people in the school district that serves the area live below the poverty line.

The Rockwood Building is located on NE 181st Avenue between Couch and Davis streets. Every one can use a helping hand sometimes, and the new building hopefully will be able to give people the help they need. Not only will the building provide services to people, the hope is that it can provide a boost for development in Rockwood in general. The city has plans for a new court house and to develop a vacant lot near the old Fred Meyers site. The Rockwood building is just the first step in improving the area.

Successful Finish for Donation Drive

The freshman class would like to give a big thank you to all those who donated to their sock and underwear drive for My Father’s House, a family homeless shelter in Gresham. They were able to collect 85 pairs of socks and 61 pairs of underwear, in addition to $85.71 in cash. It is so great to see how so many people opened their hearts to give to those in need.

Help the homeless tonight

Did you know . . .
There are over 3,000 homeless families on any given night in Multnomah County?
The average age of a homeless person is 9 years old?
Homelessness is growing exponentially at a rate of 37% each year?
There are more homeless families than there are homeless singles?

The freshman class is collecting donations of new socks and underwear for all ages at tonight’s basketball games to help with needs expressed by a local family shelter, My Father’s House, the largest privately funded family shelter of its kind in the United States. My Father’s House has an incredible success rate of 85%, and shelters over 130 families each year.

If you aren’t able to donate items, the freshman class will gladly accept cash. Please help with this worthy cause!

Food Drive

We are collecting canned and dry goods for Snow Cap which provides food to those in need in the Rockwood community. Collection will continue through January. Elementary students can bring their food as chapel offering, and anyone can drop off donations at anytime in the bins located at both elementary entrances. This food drive is also a component of our participation in the Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST).

Toy Collection

Are you clearing out toys at home to make room for new ones at Christmas? If so, we can collect them and give them to children who will love them once again. We will be collecting gently-loved toys in good condition for the Center For Family Success. The center works with families right here in the Rockwood neighborhood. You can help a local child have a Merry Christmas this year. Look for a collection box near the elementary office after the Thanksgiving weekend.

Shepherds, Sheep and a Savior

At Portland Lutheran School, Grades PreK through 4 are proud to present Shepherds, Sheep and a Savior, a Christmas Musical (Thursday, December 15 at 6:30 PM in the Elementary Gym) : On a hill just outside of Bethlehem, lowly shepherds were tending their sheep at night. They didn’t get much company out there. People had been passing through for several days as the census was underway, but they hardly spoke at all as they walked by on their way to Bethlehem. Nobody really wanted to talk to the shepherds. That is, nobody except an angel! They may have been at the bottom of the social ladder in Bethlehem, but God chose shepherds to be the first ones to see the Savior! This is their story – what they heard and what they saw that marvelous night when God came to dwell with men.
